About Felice Mendell
ARTIST STATEMENT
For more than twenty years, narrative and figurative painting and sculpture have dominated my body of work. from caryatid sculptures in fired clay and other media to mixed-media painting and collage, my art has reflected my passions and background: the exquisite beauty of the human body, design and the struggle for social justice. Throughout, vivid color and gestural strokes have been a consistent thread to express intense emotions in a diverse collection of two- and three-dimensional art.
For now, preferring to leave those stories behind, I am excited to pivot to expressive abstraction--a perfect escape from the fear and powerlessness of our times. Focusing on pure form, composition and harmonious color is an absolute joy.
ARTIST BIO
Felice’s passions—the human figure, social justice, architecture, and nature—guide her expressively colorful work.
An architect for many years, Felice left her private practice to create affordable housing, eventually becoming the Executive Director of the Women’s Institute for Housing and Economic Development in Boston. In 2005, she began to pursue her lifelong dream of being an artist with a studio in Boston’s South End. First a sculptor and mixed-media artist, her pieces have been personal and often narrative. Now residing and working in Westport, MA and Brooklyn, NY, her latest work is abstract and focused on fields of color.
Throughout her life she has taken many classes in figurative drawing, ceramics, painting, mixed-media sculpture, and abstract painting. Her award-winning work has been exhibited in galleries and juried shows in the Boston area and is in several private collections in the US and Canada.
